Different Bead Terms and their Meaning

The Beaded Giraffe proudly carries Kazuri beads, handmade and fired ceramic beads produced by a women's cooperative in Kenya. The Kazuri story began in 1975, when Belgian Congo-born Lady Susan Wood set up a bead-making studio in a small shed behind her home in Kenya. At the time, she was assisted by two women. Lady Wood soon realized that many women in the community were in need of work in order to support their extended families, and Kazuri Beads was born. Kazuri Beads moved to a factory in 1988 employing over 120 women. The factory is still located on what used to be part of the Karen Blixen estate (of "Out of Africa" fame).

Today, Kazuri - which means "small and beautiful" in Swahili -- hand-made and hand-painted ceramic jewelry and pottery is available internationally, and continues its original mission of creating a social and economic center as well as providing training and employment opportunities for the disadvantaged sector of the local community. In sub-Sarahan Africa, it is particularly difficult for women to obtain formal education and employment. The Kazuri cooperative provides these bread-winners with respect and personal fulfillment. Enjoy these unique and colorful ceramic masterpieces from the Kazuri cooperative and contribute to their success!
