The Beaded Giraffe ... a Bead Gallery

Are you an experienced beader/designer, or are your venturing for the first time into the wonderful, colorful world of beads? Either way, The Beaded Giraffe is your "beading place" in Bethesda.

Two Sisters Jewelry. the marriage of my life-long love of jewelry and an interest in the advent of beads as commercial and anthropological artifacts. Interpreting designs through the aesthetic of my teenage daughters ("two sisters") adds color and fun. And producing the pieces in gems, stones, minerals, silver, clay and other elements found in nature keeps the pieces true to the warm, tactile and eminently human aspect of personal adornment.

About craftsmanship. I use only the highest quality materials. Gemstones, pearls, jade, turquoise, coral, carnelian, jaspers, art glass from the United States and Italy, silver pendants from India, Pakistan and Thailand, African trade beads. all are clearly described for each item. All findings are sterling silver or vermeil, unless otherwise noted.

I am happy to work with you on special orders or adaptations of any of the designs you see here. Enjoy!

Ornate Vermeil Choker 20"
Item #: 156 Price: $90.00

20" choker of ornate vermeil beads, gold and black Murano glass beads and black seed bead spacers. Vermeil, pronounced "ver-may," is a 24k gold look-alike made from a base of sterling silver coated with gold, typically 22k. This is the perfect finish to a little black dress or the way to add some "pow" to a black t-shirt with jeans.

Obsidian Beads Choker 20"
Item #: 91 Price: $120.00

20" choker of obsidian beads and freshwater pearls sets off a magnificent round black and white contemporary Venetian flamework glass focal bead. Clasp is a sterling silver "S" hook. Obsidian is volcanic lava that cooled quickly. It is a stone of protection, and was probably one the first stones to be used for arrowheads and knives. It is primarily black and opaque, but may present with some lighter "slivers" in its composition.

Blue Lace Agate 19"
Item #: 219 Price: $75.00

Blue lace rounds and white pearl spacers compliment a sterling silver, blue lace agate and pearl pendant with a sterling silver clasp. Agate is a type of quartz that has hidden or microscopic crystals and bands of color forming a circular pattern. Agate is a very protective stone. It is especially protective for children, and makes an excellent stone for children's amulets, medicine bags and jewelry. Emotionally, agate gives courage, emotional strength, self-confidence, and dispels fears, easing anxiety and stress.

Spiny Oyster Shell 24"
Item #: 221 Price: $120.00

This graduated strand of spiny oyster shell beads and sterling spacers features a magnificent sterling and spiny oyster pendant. Spiny oyster shell is found around the world and was commonly used throughout Ancient Mexico, where many prehistoric artifacts still exist. An entire breastplate of spiny oyster shell that covered the body from neck to waist was recovered at the ruins in Tula, capital of the Toltecs about 968 A.D. The prehistoric Indians of Arizona and New Mexico also had access to spiny oyster and incorporated it into their ornaments as early as 700 A.D. An interesting characteristic is the fact that spiny oyster shell’s color corresponds to the depth of the water from which it is harvested. The deeper the water, the darker the color. In shallow waters, spiny oyster shell is white to a pale orange. In deeper waters, the shell is dark red-orange to purple. Purple spiny oyster shell is the most rare and valuable.

Pearl Sticks 19"
Item #: 217 Price: $90.00

Flirty top drilled pearl sticks create a "fringe" framed by grey pearl spacers and finished with a sterling silver and mother of pearl clasp. Pearls have been fashioned into jewelry for thousands of years. The inner glow of the pearl (or pearlescence) gives it a mystical appearance and has been linked to moonlight and magic. Pearls are believed to bring good luck, success, happiness and purity to the wearer, making it an ideal stone for brides.
